The Rt. Rev. John Shelby Spong (Sermonist) is the retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, NJ. He is a liberal theologian, biblical scholar, religion commentator and author. His oversight of the 1990 ordination of Barry Stopfel, an openly gay man, as a deacon (and later a priest), led to a heresy charge. An Episcopal court later ruled in favor of the ordination.
Rev. Barry Stopfel is an openly gay Episcopal priest whose ordination in 1990 was overseen by Rev. Spong. He was the first recipient of Equality Forum's International Role Model Award.
