Ideas for Students, Educators, GSAs, Schools

  • Create GLBT History Month exhibit. Print out the PDF Icon bios, images and other resources to create an exhibit at your school. Visit the resources page to access Icon materials.

  • Display posters. Download the promotional poster and the PDF bios of all 31 Icons from the resources page and post them on bulletin boards at your school or campus.

  • Screen "Gay Pioneers," about the start of the organized gay and lesbian civil rights movement. Click on the store link to obtain a copy.

  • Display cafeteria table tents. Download the table tents from the resources page for all 31 Icons. Print, fold and place them on tables in your cafeteria and classrooms.

  • Coordinate a diversity program. The struggle for equality is something shared by all minority groups. GLBT History Month can open dialogue and build bridges. Plan an assembly or panel discussion.

  • Host speakers. Invite members of the GLBT community who are connected to your school—a current or former teacher, an alumnus, a parent, a neighbor—to participate.

  • Involve your allies. GLBT History Month is designed for everyone. Order buttons at cafepress.com (or design your own!) and designate a "button-wearing day" for everyone to show their support.

  • Write an article. Submit an article to your school's newspaper.

  • If you don't have a student group, start one! Thousands of schools have created gay-straight alliances; you can too. Visit the GLSEN Web site for guidelines.
